THE COMPASSIONATE CHRIST

The statue of "The Compassionate Christ" is presented to Christ Lutheran Church by Bill and Mary Sargent. This gift is given in thanksgiving to God for the fiftieth anniversary of the Congregation.

The inspiration for this work came from a smaller piece in the private collection of Pastor Jim Bessey. Bill hand-carved the statue in pine, then added the stain and gilding to complete this piece. The center of the statue is hollowed out to remind us that Christ "emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness" (Philippians 2:7). The head of Christ is inclined towards the viewer, reminding us that our Lord hears our prayers and encourages us to share every concern with him. The lines and folds on the drapery on this piece remind us of Jewish prayer shawls and the simplicity of first-century dress.

The statue and pedestal are placed against the brick wall of the south transcept, centered on the organ chimes. This will enable us to use the south transcept for private prayer and more intimate worship. Reversing the chairs to face the altar, the space will continue to be used for Sunday worship and extra seating space.

We express our thanks to Bill and Mary for this unique and beautiful gift as a celebration of our fiftieth anniversary.

To God alone be glory!
